ABSTRACT Introduction: The emergence of orthodontic aligners has provided an aesthetic and comfortable option for orthodontic treatment. However, the encapsulated design of the aligners can influence the masticatory muscles, and might compromise safe treatment. Objective: This preliminary longitudinal study aimed to investigate whether the use of orthodontic aligners affects the biting force and myoelectric activity of the superficial masseter and anterior temporal muscles. Methods: Ten subjects participated in the study and underwent treatment during an 8-month follow-up period. The root mean square (RMS), the median power frequency (MPF) of the surface electromyography (sEMG) signals, and the biting force (kgf) were recorded and normalized relative to the pretreatment condition. The data were analyzed by repeated-measure analysis of variance (ANOVA), with the significance level set at 5%. Results: Both the superficial masseter and the anterior temporal muscles presented an increase in sEMG signal activity during the treatment, with a marked increase in the latter compared to the former (p<0.05). Moreover, a significant decrease in bite force was evidenced (p<0.05). Conclusions: This preliminary study observed that the orthodontic aligners affected the muscle recruitment pattern of masticatory muscles, and reduced biting performance during the 8-month follow-up period.

RESUMO Introdução: O surgimento dos alinhadores ortodônticos tem proporcionado uma opção estética e confortável para o tratamento ortodôntico. No entanto, o design encapsulado dos alinhadores pode influenciar os músculos mastigatórios e comprometer a segurança do tratamento. Objetivo: Este estudo longitudinal preliminar teve como objetivo investigar se o uso de alinhadores ortodônticos afeta a força de mordida e a atividade mioelétrica dos músculos masseter superficial e temporal anterior. Métodos: Dez indivíduos participaram do estudo e foram submetidos a tratamento durante um período de acompanhamento de 8 meses. A raiz quadrada média (RMS), a frequência mediana de potência (FMP) dos sinais de superfície da eletromiografia (sEMG) e a força de mordida (kgf) foram registradas e normalizadas em relação à condição de pré-tratamento. Os dados foram analisados por análise de variância para medidas repetidas (ANOVA), com nível de significância estabelecido em 5%. Resultados: Tanto o masseter superficial quanto o temporal anterior apresentaram aumento da atividade do sinal sEMG durante o tratamento, com aumento acentuado desse último em comparação ao primeiro (p<0,05). Além disso, foi evidenciada uma diminuição significativa da força de mordida (p<0,05). Conclusões: Esse estudo preliminar observou que os alinhadores ortodônticos afetaram o padrão de recrutamento muscular dos músculos mastigatórios e reduziram o desempenho da mordida durante o período de acompanhamento de oito meses.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the mechanical properties of mini-implants (MIs) manufactured from stainless steel and compare them with conventional titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy MIs. Material and Methods: The following groups were formed: G1 (n=24), 8×1.5 mm steel MIs; G2 (n=24), 12×2.0 mm steel MIs; and G3 (n=24), 10×1.5 mm titanium MIs. The 72 MIs were inserted in the infra zygomatic crest region of the maxilla and retromolar trigone in the jaw of 10 pigs. Pull-out, insertion torque, fracture and percussion tests were performed in order to measure the tensile strength, primary stability and fracture strength of MIs. A digital torque gauge was used to measure insertion and fracture torque, a universal mechanical testing machine was used for pull-out testing and a periotest device was used to measure the micromovement of MIs. For morphological and MI component evaluation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed. D'Agostino & Pearson, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn post-hoc and normality tests were used. Results: G2 insertion and fracture torques were significantly higher than G1 and G3 insertion and fracture torques (p<0.05). The pull-out and percussion tests presented similar values among the groups. SEM revealed that the fracture point was predominantly on the fourth thread for steel MIs (G1 and G2) and on the seventh thread for titanium-aluminum-vanadium MIs (G3). Conclusion: The mechanical properties of stainless steel MIs are superior to those of titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy MIs.

RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar características de jovens adultos afro-brasileiros com oclusão excelente, incluindo protrusão bimaxilar, e compará-los com os padrões caucasianos europeu-americanos, para determinar se há dimorfismo sexual na exibição desse fenótipo. Métodos: Radiografias cefalométricas laterais foram obtidas de 43 afro-brasileiros militares (28 homens e 15 mulheres, idade média de 22,4 ± 3,4 anos) com oclusão normal, selecionados de um grupo de 394 voluntários. Foram avaliadas 31 medidas angulares e lineares. O teste t de Student para amostras independentes foi utilizado para comparar os resultados com os estabelecidos pelos padrões caucasianos europeu-americanos, descrito previamente na literatura. Resultados: Considerando o padrão dentoalveolar, sete medidas angulares e seis lineares apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas (p< 0,001) quando comparadas aos padrões cefalométricos caucasianos. Sujeitos afro-brasileiros apresentaram menor ângulo da base do crânio (SNAr = 119,87 ± 5,66º) e comprimento da base craniana anterior (distância SN = 68,63 ± 4,50 mm) (p< 0,001). A maxila (SNA = 88,51 ± 3,23º) e a mandíbula (SNB = 85,06 ± 3,24º) estavam protruídas em relação à linha SN (p< 0,001). O dimorfismo de sexo foi significativo para L1.NB (graus) (p< 0,01) e ângulo interincisal (U1.L1) (p< 0,05). Conclusão: Jovens adultos afro-brasileiros apresentaram diferenças em relação às características dentárias e craniofaciais, quando comparados às normas europeias-americanas. Pode-se afirmar que as normas cefalométricas caucasianas não devem ser aplicadas às faces de indivíduos afro-brasileiros.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate characteristics of African-Brazilians young adults with excellent dental occlusion, including bimaxillary protrusion; compare them to European-American Caucasian standards, and determine whether there is sexual dimorphism in the display of this phenotype. Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 43 African-Brazilians within military personnel (28 males and 15 females, average age 22.4 ± 3.4 years) with normal occlusion, selected from a group of 394 volunteers. Thirty-one angular and linear measurements were evaluated. Student’s t-test for independent samples was used to compare results with those established by European-American standards, previously described in the literature. Results: Considering the dentoalveolar pattern, seven angular and six linear measurements showed statistically significant differences (p< 0.001) when compared to Caucasian cephalometric standards. African-Brazilians’ subjects showed lower cranial base angle (SNAr = 119.87 ± 5.66º) and anterior cranial base length (SN-distance = 68.63 ± 4.50 mm) (p< 0.001). The maxilla (SNA = 88.51 ± 3.23º) and the mandible (SNB = 85.06 ± 3.24º) were protruded in relation to the SN line (p< 0.001). Sexual dimorphism was significant for L1.NB (degrees) (p< 0.01), and interincisal angle (U1.L1) (p< 0.05). Conclusion: African-Brazilian young adults presented differences regarding dental and craniofacial characteristics, when compared to European-American norms. It can be stated that Caucasian cephalometric norms should not be applied to African-Brazilian faces.

Resumo Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a técnica cirúrgica sem retalho como alternativa à tradicional corticotomia alveolar utilizada para acelerar o movimento dentário experimental. Métodos: para induzir a movimentação dentária experimental em ratos Wistar, foram aplicados 40 cN de força ortodôntica aos primeiros molares superiores esquerdos. Quarenta ratos foram distribuídos nos grupos (n = 5) controles (GC1, GC3, GC7 e GC14) e experimentais (GE1, GE3, GE7, GE14), nos quais foram realizadas perfurações alveolares com uma ponta lança. As datas de eutanásia foram estabelecidas em 1, 3, 7 e 14 dias, respectivamente, após o início do movimento dentário. A quantidade de deslocamento dentário foi medida com um paquímetro e os osteoclastos presentes no ligamento periodontal da raiz mesial do dente movimentado foram contados por meio de avaliação histológica (coloração por fosfatase ácida resistente ao tartarato, TRAP). Resultados: embora não tenha havido diferença na quantidade de deslocamento dentário dentro dos subgrupos dos períodos experimentais correspondentes (p> 0,05), quando GC14 e GE14 foram comparados, um número maior de osteoclastos foi contado no grupo experimental (p< 0,00). Conclusão: os autores concluíram que as perfurações alveolares corticais sem retalho levaram a uma atividade osteoclástica mais intensa no décimo quarto dia; entretanto, nenhuma evidência de movimento dentário acelerado pôde ser notada.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate a flapless surgical technique as an alternative to traditional alveolar corticotomy used to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Methods: To induce OTM in Wistar rats, 40 cN of orthodontic force were applied to the maxillary left first molars. Forty rats were distributed into control groups (CG1, CG3, CG7 and CG14) and experimental groups (n= 5), in which alveolar perforations were made using a spear-shaped guide bur (EG1, EG3, EG7, EG14). Euthanasia dates were set at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days, respectively, after tooth movement began. The amount of OTM was measured with a caliper, and osteoclasts present in the periodontal ligament of the mesial root of the moved tooth were counted by means of histological evaluation (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining, TRAP). Results: Although there was no difference in the amount of OTM within subgroups of corresponding experimental periods (p> 0.05), when EG14 and CG14 were compared, a larger number of osteoclasts was counted in the experimental group (p< 0.00). Conclusion: The authors concluded that flapless cortical alveolar perforations led to more intense osteoclastic activity on the fourteenth day; nevertheless, no evidence of accelerated OTM could be noted.

Resumo Introdução: a expansão rápida da maxila (ERM) é a terapia de escolha para a correção da dimensão transversa esquelética em crianças e adolescentes, associando-se efeitos ortopédicos e dentários. Com a finalidade de prevenir os efeitos dentoalveolares indesejáveis e otimizar o potencial de expansão esquelética em indivíduos com estágios avançados de maturação esquelética, a técnica de expansão rápida da maxila assistida por mini-implantes (MARPE) foi proposta por Lee e colaboradores em 2010. Objetivo: o presente estudo apresenta um protocolo sistematizado para seleção de mini-implantes indicados para a MARPE, mediante avaliação de imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC). Variáveis relacionadas à espessura de tecido ósseo e tecido mole nas regiões de interesse do palato, bem como em relação ao anel de fixação dos mini-implantes do parafuso expansor, são analisadas e discutidas para proporcionar melhor desempenho na prática clínica.

Abstract Introduction: Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is the therapy of choice to correct skeletal transverse dimension in children and adolescents, associating orthopedic and dental effects. In an attempt to prevent the undesirable dentoalveolar effects and optimize the potential of skeletal expansion in individuals in advanced stages of skeletal maturation, the miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE) was proposed by Lee et al. in 2010. Objective: This paper presents a systematized protocol for selection of miniscrews indicated for MARPE, by the evaluation of cone-beam computed tomographies (CBCT). Variables related with the bone and soft tissue thicknesses at the palatal regions of interest, as well as in relation to the fixation rings of miniscrews of the palatal expander are analyzed and discussed to provide better performance in the clinical practice.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In dental practice, low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) are mainly used for dental surgery and biostimulation therapy. Within the Orthodontic specialty, while LLLT has been widely used to treat pain associated with orthodontic movement, accelerate bone regeneration after rapid maxillary expansion, and enhance orthodontic tooth movement, HILT, in turn, has been seen as an alternative for addressing soft tissue complications associated to orthodontic treatment. Objective: The aim of this study is to discuss HILT applications in orthodontic treatment. Methods: This study describes the use of HILT in surgical treatments such as gingivectomy, ulotomy, ulectomy, fiberotomy, labial and lingual frenectomies, as well as hard tissue and other dental restorative materials applications. Conclusion: Despite the many applications for lasers in Orthodontics, they are still underused by Brazilian practitioners. However, it is quite likely that this demand will increase over the next years - following the trend in the USA, where laser therapies are more widely used.

RESUMO Introdução: a etiologia do apinhamento dentário pode estar relacionada à constrição das arcadas dentárias em diversas dimensões, e a manipulação apropriada do perímetro da arcada, por meio da intervenção em casos de discrepâncias de base óssea, pode ser o fator chave para a dissolução do apinhamento, especialmente em casos onde a movimentação de incisivos é limitada em decorrência de problemas periodontais ou restrições relacionadas ao perfil facial. Objetivos: o presente relato de caso ilustra uma paciente de 24 anos de idade, com deficiência transversa de maxila, apinhamento das arcadas superior e inferior, má oclusão de Classe II, 1a divisão, subdivisão direita, incisivos superiores previamente traumatizados e perfil reto. A abordagem de tratamento não-cirúrgica e sem extrações foi viável devido à técnica de expansão rápida da maxila assistida por mini-implantes (MARPE, do inglês miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion). Métodos: o dispositivo MARPE foi confeccionado a partir de um expansor Hyrax convencional apoiado em quatro mini-implantes. Foi adotado o protocolo de expansão lenta, com um período total de ativações de 40 dias e 3 meses de contenção. Uma mecânica de tração intrusiva apoiada em mini-implantes foi utilizada para a correção da relação de Classe II subdivisão direita, adequação do perímetro da arcada inferior e correção do desvio da linha média antes da inclusão dos incisivos centrais superiores. Resultados: os registros pós-tratamento demonstraram o aumento de 5,0 mm na distância intermolares, relação bilateral de Classe I de molares e caninos, resolução do apinhamento superior e inferior, linhas médias dentárias coincidentes e intercuspidação adequada. Conclusões: a técnica MARPE é uma abordagem de tratamento efetiva para a resolução da deficiência de perímetro das arcadas dentárias relacionada à discrepância maxilar transversa em pacientes adultos.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Etiology of dental crowding may be related to arch constriction in diverse dimensions, and an appropriate manipulation of arch perimeter by intervening in basal bone discrepancies cases, may be a key for crowding relief, especially when incisors movement is limited due to underlying pathology, periodontal issues or restrictions related to soft tissue profile. Objectives: This case report illustrates a 24-year old woman, with maxillary transverse deficiency, upper and lower arches crowding, Class II, division 1, subdivision right relationship, previous upper incisors traumatic episode and straight profile. A non-surgical and non-extraction treatment approach was feasible due to the miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion technique (MARPE). Methods: The MARPE appliance consisted of a conventional Hyrax expander supported by four orthodontic miniscrews. A slow expansion protocol was adopted, with an overall of 40 days of activation and a 3-month retention period. Intrusive traction miniscrew-anchored mechanics were used for correcting the Class II subdivision relationship, managing lower arch perimeter and midline deviation before including the upper central incisors. Results: Post-treatment records show an intermolar width increase of 5 mm, bilateral Class I molar and canine relationships, upper and lower crowding resolution, coincident dental midlines and proper intercuspation. Conclusions: The MARPE is an effective treatment approach for managing arch-perimeter deficiencies related to maxillary transverse discrepancies in adult patients.

OBJETIVO: avaliar quatro métodos de condicionamento químico da superfície cerâmica, previamente à colagem de braquetes, e seu impacto sobre a resistência ao cisalhamento e a integridade da superfície ao descolamento.MÉTODOS: quatro grupos experimentais (n = 13) foram delineados de acordo com o método de condicionamento da superfície cerâmica empregado: G1 = ácido fosfórico a 37%, seguido da aplicação de silano; G2 = ácido fosfórico líquido a 37%, seguido da aplicação de silano sem lavagem prévia do ácido; G3 = ácido fluorídrico a 10%; e G4 = ácido fluorídrico a 10%, seguido da aplicação de silano. Após o condicionamento da superfície, braquetes metálicos foram colados à porcelana utilizando-se o sistema Transbond XP (3M Unitek). As amostras foram submetidas a ensaios de resistência ao cisalhamento, em máquina de ensaio universal, e as superfícies cerâmicas foram posteriormente avaliadas em microscópio, com magnitude de 8X. Testes ANOVA/Tukey foram realizados para verificar-se a diferença entre os grupos (α = 5%).RESULTADOS: os maiores valores de resistência ao cisalhamento foram encontrados nos grupos G3 e G4 (22,01 ± 2,15MPa e 22,83 ± 3,32Mpa, respectivamente), seguidos por G1 (16,42 ± 3,61MPa) e G2 (9,29 ± 1,95MPa). Quanto à avaliação da superfície após a descolagem do braquete, a utilização de ácido fosfórico líquido seguido da aplicação de silano, sem lavagem do ácido (G2), produziu menores danos à porcelana. Quando ácido fluorídrico e silano foram aplicados, o risco de fraturar a cerâmica aumentou.CONCLUSÕES: níveis aceitáveis de resistência de união para uso clínico foram alcançados por todos os métodos testados. No entanto, o condicionamento com ácido fosfórico líquido, seguido da aplicação de silano (G2), resultou em menor dano à superfície cerâmica.

OBJECTIVE: To assess four different chemical surface conditioning methods for ceramic material before bracket bonding, and their impact on shear bond strength and surface integrity at debonding.METHODS: Four experimental groups (n = 13) were set up according to the ceramic conditioning method: G1 = 37% phosphoric acid etching followed by silane application; G2 = 37% liquid phosphoric acid etching, no rinsing, followed by silane application; G3 = 10% hydrofluoric acid etching alone; and G4 = 10% hydrofluoric acid etching followed by silane application. After surface conditioning, metal brackets were bonded to porcelain by means of the Transbond XP system (3M Unitek). Samples were submitted to shear bond strength tests in a universal testing machine and the surfaces were later assessed with a microscope under 8 X magnification. ANOVA/Tukey tests were performed to establish the difference between groups (α= 5%).RESULTS: The highest shear bond strength values were found in groups G3 and G4 (22.01 ± 2.15 MPa and 22.83 ± 3.32 Mpa, respectively), followed by G1 (16.42 ± 3.61 MPa) and G2 (9.29 ± 1.95 MPa). As regards surface evaluation after bracket debonding, the use of liquid phosphoric acid followed by silane application (G2) produced the least damage to porcelain. When hydrofluoric acid and silane were applied, the risk of ceramic fracture increased.CONCLUSIONS: Acceptable levels of bond strength for clinical use were reached by all methods tested; however, liquid phosphoric acid etching followed by silane application (G2) resulted in the least damage to the ceramic surface.

INTRODUÇÃO: a técnica de colagem indireta prioriza a otimização do procedimento de montagem do aparelho fixo na clínica ortodôntica, assegurando, entre outras, vantagens relacionadas à precisão no posicionamento dos braquetes. Nesse procedimento clínico laboratorial, o material e o método de confecção da moldeira de transferência são determinantes no quesito precisão. OBJETIVO: este artigo descreve uma técnica de colagem indireta simples, eficiente e reprodutível, para que o procedimento possa ser realizado com sucesso. Variáveis que exercem influência sobre o procedimento são analisadas e discutidas, a fim de auxiliar o profissional a adotar, de forma rotineira, a técnica de colagem indireta em sua prática clínica.

INTRODUCTION: The indirect bonding technique optimizes fixed appliance installation at the orthodontic office, ensuring precise bracket positioning, among other advantages. In this laboratory clinical phase, material and methods employed in creating the transfer tray are decisive to accuracy. OBJECTIVE: This article describes a simple, efficient and reproducible indirect bonding technique that allows the procedure to be carried out successfully. Variables influencing the orthodontic bonding are analyzed and discussed in order to aid professionals wishing to adopt the indirect bonding technique routinely in their clinical practice.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pitch distance on the primary stability (PS) of orthodontic mini-implants (MIs) in artificial bone. Twenty experimental MIs were allocated to two groups, according to their geometric design: G1(30oX 0.6 mm) and G2(45o X 0.8 mm), and inserted into artificial bone of different densities: D1 (0.32 g/cm3) and D2 (0.64 g/cm3). The maximum insertion torque (IT) and removal torque (RT) values were recorded in N.cm. Loss of torque (LT) values were obtained by calculating the difference between the IT and RT. MI mobility was measured by means of a Periotest assessment. Normality and homogeneity were determined by means of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests, respectively. A two-way ANOVA was used to detect differences between the mini-implant design and density factors. The ANOVA/Tukey tests were used to determine the intergroup difference. Higher IT values were observed for G2 (p ≤ 0.05) in D2. No statistical difference for RT was observed between the groups, whereas G2 presented higher values only for LT (p ≤ 0.05). The Periotest values (PTV) were higher for G1, in comparison with G2, in D1. G1 presented better PS in D2 (IT, RT and LT), whereas G2 was found to be more stable in D1, after evaluation with Periotest.

OBJETIVO: avaliar, por meio de tomografias computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC), as dimensões transversais do complexo nasomaxilar de pacientes submetidos à expansão rápida da maxila (ERM) e sem intervenção. MÉTODOS: este estudo clínico prospectivo e controlado avaliou 30 indivíduos (18 meninos e 12 meninas) durante o período de crescimento puberal e dentição mista. O grupo tratado foi submetido à ERM com expansor de Haas, permanecendo 6 meses em contenção e sendo acompanhados por mais 6 meses após a remoção. O grupo controle foi acompanhado durante o mesmo tempo. Foram realizadas TCFC ao início e um ano após a fase ativa. Com o programa Dolphin Imaging 11.5, a largura entre os primeiros molares superiores (U6), angulação dos U6 direito e esquerdo, largura maxilar alveolar, largura maxilar basal, largura alveolar do palato, largura basal do palato, angulação alveolar direita e esquerda, área palatina, largura da base nasal, largura da cavidade nasal e área da cavidade nasal inferior foram obtidas em cortes coronais posterior, médio e anterior, com exceção das duas primeiras medidas, que foram obtidas apenas no corte coronal posterior. RESULTADOS: todas as medidas foram significativamente (p < 0,05) maiores no grupo da ERM, com exceção da angulação alveolar e da área da cavidade nasal, as quais não foram significativas (p > 0,05) entre os grupos. Os resultados sugerem que, um ano após a ERM, a dimensão transversal na cavidade nasal, maxila, palato e região dos molares são maiores do que em indivíduos não tratados. O protocolo de ERM utilizado foi eficaz na manutenção da dimensão transversal durante período de acompanhamento.

The aim of this study was to assess by means of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans the transverse effects on the nasomaxillary complex in patients submitted to rapid maxillary expansion (RME) using Haas expander in comparison to untreated individuals. This prospective controlled clinical study assessed 30 subjects (18 boys and 12 girls) with mixed dentition and during pubertal growth. The treated group was submitted to RME with Haas expander, retention for six months and a six-month follow-up after removal. The control group matched the treated group in terms of age and sex distribution. CBCT scans were taken at treatment onset and one year after the expander was activated. Maxillary first molars (U6) width, right and left U6 angulation, maxillary alveolar width, maxillary basal width, palatal alveolar width, palatal base width, right and left alveolar angulation, palatal area, nasal base width, nasal cavity width and inferior nasal cavity area on the posterior, middle and anterior coronal slices were measured with Dolphin Imaging Software(r) 11.5, except for the first two variables which were performed only on the posterior slice. All transverse dimensions increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the treated group in comparison to the control, except for alveolar angulation and inferior nasal cavity area (P > 0.05). Results suggest that increase of molar, maxillary, palatal and nasal transverse dimensions was stable in comparison to the control group one year after treatment with RME.

INTRODUÇÃO: o presente estudo teve como objetivo desenvolver um método para avaliar as mudanças nas áreas transversais palatinas e linguais em pacientes submetidos à expansão rápida da maxila (ERM). MÉTODOS: a amostra foi composta por 31 indivíduos com má oclusão Classe I de Angle, submetidos a ERM e divididos em dois grupos, tratados com expansores tipo Haas (17 pacientes) e de Hyrax (14 pacientes). Tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico foram adquiridas em T0 e T1 (antes da expansão e seis meses após a estabilização do parafuso). Áreas transversais da maxila e mandíbula foram avaliadas nas regiões de primeiros molares permanentes e pré-molares e comparadas entre T0 e T1. A área oclusal mandibular também foi analisada. RESULTADOS: as áreas transversais maxilares aumentaram 56,18mm2 e 44,32mm2 para regiões posterior e anterior, respectivamente. Esses valores foram menores para mandíbula, representando aumentos de 40,32mm2 e de 39,91mm2 para as seções anterior e posterior. Não foram encontradas diferenças quando se comparam os dois expansores. A área oclusal mandibular aumentou 43,99mm2 e incisivos inferiores vestibularizaram. Incrementos de 1,74mm e 1,7mm ocorreram entre as distâncias intermolares e interpré-molares inferiores. Essas mesmas distâncias apresentaram incrementos de 5,5mm e de 5,57mm para maxila. CONCLUSÃO: as áreas transversais avaliadas e oclusal de mandíbula aumentaram significativamente após a ERM. O processo descrito parece ser um método confiável e preciso para avaliar as mudanças das área intrabucais propostas.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to develop a method to assess the changes in palatal and lingual cross-sectional areas in patients submitted to rapid maxillary expansion (RME). METHODS: The sample comprised 31 Class I malocclusion individuals submitted to RME and divided into two groups treated with Haas (17 patients) and Hyrax (14 patients) expanders. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were acquired at T0 (before expansion ) and T1 (six months after screw stabilization). Maxillary and mandibular cross-sectional areas were assessed at first permanent molars and first premolars regions and compared at T0 and T1. Mandibular occlusal area was also analyzed. RESULTS: Maxillary cross-sectional areas increased in 56.18 mm2 and 44.32 mm2 for the posterior and anterior regions. These values were smaller for the mandible, representing augmentation of 40.32 mm2 and 39.91 mm2 for posterior and anterior sections. No differences were found when comparing both expanders. Mandibular occlusal area increased 43.99mm2 and mandibular incisors proclined. Increments of 1.74 mm and 1.7 mm occurred in mandibular intermolar and interpremolar distances. These same distances presented increments of 5.5 mm and 5.57 mm for the maxillary arch. CONCLUSION: Occlusal and cross-sectional areas increased significantly after RME. The method described seems to be reliable and precise to assess intraoral area changes.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo deste estudo foi verificar, a partir de um levantamento epidemiológico de base escolar, a prevalência de mordida aberta anterior, analisando a influência do hábito da chupeta no seu estabelecimento. MÉTODOS: na primeira etapa, foi aplicado um questionário aos responsáveis e, posteriormente, foram feitos exames clínicos em 237 escolares de 3 a 14 anos do município Santo Expedito do Sul/RS. RESULTADOS: o tamanho da população, segundo o sexo, foi de 50,3% meninos e 49,4% meninas, com média de idade de 8,6 anos, sendo que 16% possuíam dentição decídua; 50,2%, dentição mista; e 33,8%, dentição permanente. Verificou-se uma prevalência de 22,8% de mordida aberta anterior, obtendo-se associação significativa entre a mordida aberta anterior e o hábito de sucção de chupeta, nas três dentições. CONCLUSÃO: a duração e a frequência do hábito estiveram fortemente associadas à má oclusão de mordida aberta anterior nas dentições decídua e mista.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to verify from a school-based epidemiological survey, the prevalence of anterior open bite, analyzing the influence of pacifier habit in the school. METHODS: The first step was a questionnaire for the parents, and later clinical examinations in 237 school children, 3-14 years old, in the city of Santo Expedito do Sul/RS, Brazil. RESULTS: The population gender distribution was 50.3% boys and 49.4% girls with a mean age of 8.63 years, and 16% had primary dentition, 50.2% mixed dentition and 33.8 % permanent dentition. There was a 22.8% prevalence of anterior open bite, obtaining a significant association between anterior open bite and the pacifier sucking habit on the three dentitions. CONCLUSION: The duration and frequency of the habit were strongly associated with anterior open bite malocclusion in the deciduous and mixed dentitions.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that there is a direct relationship between surface structure and tensile strength of orthodontic alloys submitted to different levels of welding current. Three types of alloys were assessed. One hundred and eight cross-sectional test specimens ("X") were made, 18 for each wire combination, and divided into 6 groups: SS (steel-steel); SN (steel-NiTi); SB (steel-Beta-Ti); NN (NiTi-NiTi); NB (NiTi-Beta-Ti) and BB (Beta-Ti-Beta-Ti), submitted to 6 spot-welding procedures at different levels of current (Super Micro Ponto 3000). Student-Newman-Keuls, Wilcoxon signed-rank, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used (p < .05). Statistical difference was found between SN group and all the other alloy combinations (p < .05). Initial roughness of alloys ranged from .04 to .55 Ra, with statistical difference between groups (p < .001). The hypothesis was rejected and the tensile strength of Ti-alloys combinations Steel × Beta-Ti was significantly affected by the current level at P50, which changed the properties and structure of the wires.
